Awards Categories Below are the categories for the 2011 Computerworld Hong Kong Awards.
Corporate Multifunctional Copier/Printer/Scanner
A single multifunction peripheral designed for business use and services several functions, mainly photocopying, printing and scanning.

Datacenter Cooling Systems
A system designed for reducing the temperature of data center environments through the use of fans, air conditioning, water or a combination of these cooling technologies.

Datacenter Power Systems
A system that is designed to provide power to data centers. They are larger in form factor that desktop versions of uninterruptible power system (UPS), and often feature extensive fault tolerance and resilience capabilities.

Mid-range Server (50-200 users)
A computer that services to 50-200 users and runs at least one Server OS. Rack mounted or blade servers that share key physical components, such as power and hard disks, are also grouped under this category.

Enterprise Server (201 users+)
A computer that services to more than 200 users and runs at least one Server OS.
Antivirus/Antispam
Software that searches IT systems for viruses and/or spam and removes/blocks/quarantines them when they are found. This category includes standalone devices featuring this software as well as client and server versions.

Content Filtering/Anti-Spyware
Software that searches incoming/outgoing content for harmful/unintended content, while preventing other software programs gathering, appending, changing or deleting content without permission. This category includes standalone devices featuring this software as well as client and server versions.

Firewall/VPN
Software that prevents unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks connected to the Internet, especially intranets, using a combination filtering techniques and/or encryption. This category includes standalone devices featuring this software.

Identity Management
Software that protects user digital identities using identity protection techniques/algorithms and authentication. This category includes standalone devices featuring this software as well as client and server versions.

Intrusion Detection/Intrusion Prevention (IDS/IPS)
Software hat monitors network and/or system activities for malicious or unwanted behavior and can react, in real-time, to block or prevent those activities.

Managed Security Services
A company based in Hong Kong that offers managed services related to information and network security management to businesses. This category does not include physical security, such as the installation of surveillance cameras and security guards.

IP Surveillance
Video-based security technology or product that is IT-based. This category covers cameras, encoders and related equipment but does not include the use of security personnel for surveillance.

Unified Threat Management (UTM)
A security appliance or a suite of software programs that integrates a range of security features, including firewall, gateway anti-virus, and intrusion detection and prevention capabilities.
Application Server & Middleware
Software, also called an appserver, which processes all application requests between users and backend business applications or databases.

BI and Analytics
Software that gathers, analyzes and provides reports on stored data for better decision-making. This category does not include Data Mining and OLAP software that analyzes data for correlation but can be included if it is a feature.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
Software that helps users to manage customer relationships at all customer interaction points in an organized way. This category does not include call center management software.

Data Mining & OLAP
Decision support software that allows users to analyze and correlate data that has been summarized in multi-dimensional views or hierarchies, and identify trends and patterns.

Database Management
Software or collection of systems that allows users to access, organize and search data found in a database.

Development Tools/Web Services
Software or suite of software tools that can be used to create new software or services.

Document and Content Management

Software or collection of systems that allow users to manage according to documents or content and store documents/content whose information is largely self-contained.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
Software that integrates all business functions, including but not limited to planning, manufacturing, sales and marketing. This category does not include SCM-only software, but can be included as a component/feature/module.

Server OS
An operating system found in a server and includes file, task and job management and advanced systems management tools.

Supply Chain Management (SCM)
Software that enables the control and management of a physical supply chain as a software process.

Systems Management
Software or a collection of systems for configuring and managing IT resources from a single console that may include network resources.

Virtualization
Technology that enables the masking of server resources, including the number and identity of individual physical servers, processors, and operating systems, from server users. It includes virtual and paravirtual machines, plus OS-level virtualization products.
Consulting & Systems Integration
A company based in Hong Kong that provides IT consulting and system integration services to businesses.

Corporate Mobile Services Provider
A company based in Hong Kong that provides mobile connectivity services, such as GPRS, GSM, 3G, EDGE, HDSPA, 4G etc., to businesses. This category includes companies that provide WLAN and MESH services.

Data & Telecoms Services Provider
A company based in Hong Kong providing data and telecoms-related services, such as IP-PBX, IP-VPN, etc., to other businesses.

IT Hosting & Outsourcing Services Provider
A company based in Hong Kong providing hosting and outsourcing services to businesses, including but not limited to hardware outsourcing, software development outsourcing, business process outsourcing, managed hosting facilities etc. This category does not include managed services providers.

Managed Services Provider
A company based in Hong Kong that provides managed network-related services or IT functions to businesses. This category does not include the provision of managed hosting facilities.
Backup Storage (Tape)
A storage device that uses sequential-access media such as tapes to back up and store data.

Backup Storage (Disk)
A storage device that uses random-access media such as disks to back up and store data.

Mid-range Storage Systems
A networked storage system, either a NAS, SAN or a hybrid of both, for mid-sized businesses or datacenters running key business applications. They offer scalability to multiple terabytes of capacity, high-performance, data protection features, and a fully integrated suite of centralized management tools for greater administrative control.

Enterprise Storage Systems
A networked storage system, either a NAS, SAN or a hybrid of both, for enterprise-wide deployment, large-size data centers and mission-critical applications. They feature maximum scalability, industry-leading performance, a fully integrated suite of centralized management tools, and data protection and disaster recovery features.

Storage Management Software
Management tool that includes SRM and SAN management software, performance monitoring, file systems, volume management, virtualization, security, etc. This category includes software that is bundled as an appliance or device
Call Center Management
Software that is used by call centers for managing their core operations.

Enterprise Router (50 users+)
A network device that forwards data packets along networks and is connected to 50 or more concurrent users.

Enterprise Switch (50 users+)
A network device that filters and forwards data packets between networks or LAN segments, and is connected to 50 or more concurrent users.

IP PBX
An IP-based private telephone network used in a company that uses VoIP technology for enabling voice communication.

Messaging and Collaboration
Software used for communicating and interacting with other users.

Structured Cabling
A building or campus telecommunications cabling infrastructure that includes a number of standardized smaller elements or subsystems (hence the name ‘structured’).

Unified Communications
Software that enables the management of all forms of call and multimedia/cross-media messages by a single user. It encompasses unified messaging, collaboration, and interaction systems; real-time and near real-time communications; and transactional and informational applications.

Enterprise Video Conferencing
A suite of products and technology that provides two-way simultaneous audio and video transmission allowing for a meeting between different parties across different locations. Typically a hardware and software offering installed in conference and meeting rooms. This category does not include web conferencing products that are installed in PCs.

WAN Optimization
A product that accelerates and optimizes the performance of networks to enable consistent and better service levels for applications being delivered across a wide area network.

WLAN Switch
A network device that filters and forwards data packet to and from a wireless LAN.
A Hong Kong-based company that is selected as the foremost company of the year in the provision of IT products and/or services to organizations locally and overseas that has been integral to the advancement of the IT industry in Hong Kong.
