Awards Categories

Although the categories seldom have changed over the years, some new ones have been added and a few old ones have been retired — in line with the region's current trends. Below are the categories for the 2010 Computerworld Hong Kong Awards.


Categories and Descriptions    

Hardware
Corporate Multifunctional Copier/Printer/Scanner
A single device that offers more than one function, including printing, photocopying and scanning.

Datacenter Cooling Systems
Cooling systems used to control datacenter environments, using fans, air conditioning, water or a combination of these cooling devices.

Datacenter Power Systems
Power systems that are used to provide power to data centers, centralized facilities that store data. They are sometimes known as uninterruptible power systems but are larger in form factor than the desktop versions, and often feature extensive fault tolerance and resilience capabilities.

Mid-range Server (50-200 users)
A computer that a server program runs on that provides services to 50-200 users. It does not necessarily need to take the form of traditional PCs and can be designed as rack or blade servers that share key components.

Enterprise Server (201 users+)
A computer that a server program runs on that provides services to more than 200 users.

 

Security
Antivirus/Anti-Spam
Software that searches hard disks for viruses and/or spam and removes/blocks/quarantines them when they are found.

Content Filtering/Anti-Spyware
Software that prevents other software programs from gathering user information or content without permission.

Firewall/VPN
Implemented in both hardware and software, or a combination of both, this security product prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks connected to the Internet, especially intranets, using a combination filtering techniques and/or encryption.

Identity Management
Software or a suite of identity protection and authentication software tools that strengthen and protect user digital identities.

Intrusion Detection/Intrusion Prevention (IDS/IPS)
Separate or combined network security products that monitor network and/or system activities for malicious or unwanted behavior and can react, in real-time, to block or prevent those activities.

Managed Security Services
A company that provides managed services related to information and network security management. The services should be able to minimize users’ security risk exposure and help enterprises detect, prevent and control security threats.

IP Surveillance
Video-based security technology or product that is IP-based. This category covers cameras, encoders and related equipment.

Unified Threat Management (UTM)
A security appliance or a suite of software programs that integrates a range of security features, including firewall, gateway anti-virus, and intrusion detection and prevention capabilities.

 

Applications
Application Server & Middleware
Software, also called an appserver, which handles all application operations between users and backend business applications or databases.

BI and Analytics
Software that gathers, stores, analyzes and provides access to stored data for better decision-making.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM)
Software that helps users to manage customer relationships at all customer interaction points in an organized way.

Data Mining & OLAP
Decision support software that allows users to analyze and correlate data that has been summarized in multi-dimensional views or hierarchies and identify trends and patterns.

Database Management
Software or collection of systems that allows users to access, organize and search data found in a database.

Development Tools/Web Services
Software or suite of software tools that can be used to create new software or services.

Document and Content Management
Software or collection of systems that allow users to manage according to documents or content and store documents/content whose information is largely self-contained.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
Software that integrates all business functions, including but not limited to planning, manufacturing, sales and marketing.

Server OS
An operating system found in a server and includes file, task and job management and advanced systems management tools.

Supply Chain Management (SCM)
Software that enables the control and management of a physical supply chain as a software process.

Systems Management
Software or collection of systems for configuring and managing computer resources that may include network resources.

Virtualization
Technology that enables the masking of server resources, including the number and identity of individual physical servers, processors, and operating systems, from server users. Includes: Virtual and paravirtual machines, plus OS-level virtualization products.

 

Networking and communications
Call Center Management
Software that is used by call centers for managing their core operations.

Enterprise Router (50 users+)
A network device that forwards data packets along networks and is connected to 50 or more concurrent users.

Enterprise Switch (50 users+)
A network device that filters and forwards data packets between networks or LAN segments, and is connected to 50 or more concurrent users.

IP PBX
An IP-based private telephone network used in a company that uses VoIP technology for enabling voice communication.

Messaging and Collaboration
Software used for communicating and interacting with other users.

Structured Cabling
A building or campus telecommunications cabling infrastructure that includes a number of standardized smaller elements or subsystems (hence the name ‘structured’).

Unified Communications
Software that enables the management of all forms of call and multimedia/cross-media messages by a single user. It encompasses unified messaging, collaboration, and interaction systems; real-time and near real-time communications; and transactional and informational applications.

Video Conferencing
A suite of products and technology that provides two-way simultaneous audio and video transmission allowing for a meeting between a number of parties across different locations. Typically a hardware product plus software installed in conference and meeting rooms. This category does not include web conferencing products.

WAN Optimization
A product that accelerates and optimizes the performance of networks to enable consistent and better service levels for applications being delivered across a wide area network.

WLAN Switch
A network device that filters and forwards data packet to and from a wireless LAN.

 

Services
Consulting & Systems Integration
A company that provides IT consulting and system integration services in Hong Kong.

Corporate Mobile Services Provider
A company that provides mobile services to companies, such as GPRS, GSM, 3G, etc.

Data & Telecoms Services Provider
A company that provides data and telecoms-related services, such as IP-PBX, IP-VPN, etc.

IT Hosting & Outsourcing Services Provider
A company that provides IT sourcing services in Hong Kong, including but not limited to hardware outsourcing, software development outsourcing, business process outsourcing, etc. This category does not include data center outsourcing or hosting services.

Managed Services Provider
A company that provides network-related services or IT functions such as managed LAN, WAN, mobility and VoIP or other communications services. This category does not include the provision of managed hosting facilities.

 

Storage
Backup Storage (Tape)
Storage device that uses sequential-access media such as tapes to back up data.

Backup Storage (Disk)
Storage device that uses random-access media such as disks to back up data.

Mid-range Storage Systems
A networked storage system for mid- to large-size datacenters running key business applications. They offer scalability to multiple terabytes of capacity, high-performance, data protection features, and a fully integrated suite of centralized management tools for greater administrative control.

Enterprise Storage Systems
A networked storage system for enterprise-wide deployment and mission-critical applications.
They feature maximum scalability, industry-leading performance, a fully integrated suite of centralized management tools, and data protection and disaster recovery features.

Storage Management Software
Management tool that includes SRM and SAN management software, performance monitoring, file systems, volume management, virtualization, security, etc., or software bundled as an “appliance.”

Hong Kong Technology Company of the Year
A Hong Kong-based company that is selected as the foremost company of the year in the provision of IT products and/or services to organizations locally and overseas that has been integral to the advancement of the IT industry in Hong Kong.
